Wavy Hair

There isn't just one type of curly hair.  I have them separated in different posts on how to care for and style each type.  If you curly haired clients out there have any other suggestions on what works for your hair please comment below!

Wavy Hair

To start off, here are some pictures to give you an idea of where your hair fits.  Here are pictures of naturally wavy hair.

Wavy, curly hair is in style right now so stop straightening those awesome, lovely locks everyday and embrace what you have!  Girls like me wish we could have just a kink in our hair!  I am not saying stop all together with straightening but give your hair a break with the iron heat and get those curls a rockin! :)

TIPS for a frizz-free you:
Use a shower comb.  You will find the shower comb to be your best friend!  If you use a shower comb when you’re applying conditioner, you won’t need to comb once you’re out of the shower. The less you use the comb, the less you will disperse your waves.

You can get a shower comb at a near by drug store or Sally's Beauty Supply.

Gently towel dry your hair with a patting motion.  You don't want to rub your hair hard with your towel.  That creates friction on your hair which then creates frizz.  If you have a microfiber towel that would be best for your hair.  It will reduce frizz and speed up drying time, which is great if you usually air-dry.  DO NOT twist your hair up in a turban with your towel.  It can cause breakage and frizz.

Apply product to wet hair.  If you are still dripping wet then pat your hair until you just have wet hair.  Apply a leave-in conditioner throughout your hair making sure you have applied it evenly.  Bed Head Ego boost is a good one, I swear by Moroccanoil for all hair types and also Ouidad moisture lock my mother-in-law loves.

Leave-in conditioner options:

In sections, apply a curl defining cream or gel product through the mid shaft and ends.  If you take a whole glob of product and rub it through your hair you will have crusty sections when it dries and no one wants crusty hair.  So put about a dime size amount of product in your hands and rub them together.  Then starting at your ends scrunch the product in your hair and move up your hair to your roots.  Continue this through each section of your head.  Mizani True Textures Perfect Curl Defining Cream Gel, Pureology RealCurl, BedHead After Party (my mother-in-law also swears by), TIGI Catwalk Curl Collection Curlesque Curls Rock Amplifier and MoroccanOil curl defining cream.  You can find these products at your salon or at a beauty supply place they have in malls or shopping centers.  Sally's Beauty Supply will not have these products.

Curl defining cream or gel options:

At this point, you can go two directions.  You can air dry your hair or blow dry your hair with a diffuser.  Just remember with either option DO NOT touch your hair.  You need to let your curl set and completely dry before you can touch it.  If you touch it while it is drying it will disturb the curl and you will get frizz.  If you diffuse your hair, make sure you do it on high heat and low speed.  Flip your hair upside down and blow the curls upward toward your scalp going in an up and down motion.  When your hair is about 85% dry, you can flip your hair up and start drying the top of your hair with the diffuser, scooping the hair up with the diffuser.  This will help to give your hair more volume.

When your hair is dry and you have quite a few straighter curls on top, most curly clients do, then you can define them with a curling wand or curling iron.  Curling wands are AMAZING for curly hair clients.  I would invest in one of these if I were you.  When you purchase one make sure you buy one that is bigger at the base and smaller at the end, making a more natural curl.  Some of them are  4-in-1 or 3-in-1.  If you get one of those they are a double bonus for you!  You will have different options to curl your hair.

  <------This is a 3-in-1 curling wand.

To refresh your curl for second day use a product like Curly Hair Solutions Tweek.  Work it through your dry hair, from roots to ends. If you have longer waves and you find your hair losing volume throughout the day, bend over and work the product through your roots that way. When you stand up straight again, your hair should have some extra lift.  Another good type of product for first or second day hair is bigsexyhair powder play.  This is a volumizing powder that gives you more lift and volume at the roots.

That is it for wavy hair clients.  Comment if you have found products or tips that work for you!
